When do you guys and girls collect your match fees. Is it best before the match or at the end?

If you did the job properly you wouldn't have to make a quick exit. wink.gif

Here in Portsmouth we are not allowed to collect before the match (although if it was offered I would take it). Last season I put in a rule change asking for refs to be paid paid beforehand but it was over ruled.

I don't mind, I'd rather have it after most of the time so I don't have to worry about it being in my bag/falling out of my pocket, but sometimes you want a quick exit :s...

In the states it is commonplace to receive fees before the match. The exception is high school games, where the association hands out checks every month with a total of all of your fees. I don't want to referee a game and have the home team coach not pay the fees because he was not happy with a call I made during the second half of the game.

Before where possible. It is a requirement of the leagues I am on and teams can be fined for not doing it.

I personally don't have too much of an issue if it is after but do get annoyed when it is delayed because the manager has to THEN collect subs from all of the players. That's not putting me in a good position if they are angry about a decision! It's that sort of situation I would be tempted to report them on, as it is just rude.

And that's the rub. Some of my leagues specify in their rules that we be paid at the end of the game.

Confusing? Not half!

Normaly collect mine after the game, some leagues stipulate that the payment is made before the game but I don't push it, if the club forgets or refuses payment, not a problem, I don't chase them just call the league in question, I get paid and they get fined, simples

I had one a few weeks ago where the team that were supposed to pay me after the match had all cleared off before I finished getting changed. It happens sometimes, well it is Sunday league, so instead of ringing the league I rang their secretary who was very apologetic (with an excuse that someone else was supposed to do it) and he snet me a cheque through the post. And with an extra £5 for my 'inconvenience'!

I have run Sunday League teams for years and know it happens sometimes (although I never forgot to pay the ref myself) and I also know they don't have money lying around to pay fines so rather than inform the league and get them fined even more I try to resolve it with the club. Never failed yet.

I've never been in the situation of having a team 'forget' to pay me, as its something they do every week, it'd be like forgetting to put the goal nets up!

I have had teams refuse to pay me £12.50 (half fee) after I've come out to referee a match only to find the ground is unfit for play. I did warn them that if they refused to pay me I'd have no choice but to report it to the league who have the option of fining the club. They didn't heed the warning, and the club were charged 'double fee' (i.e. £25) and an additional 'non payment of the referee' fine of £25. So it cost them £50 in the end, as opposed to £12.50 if they had just paid me straight away. The league also sent me a cheque for the match fee on the Tuesday after the Sunday morning game, so I wasn't overly put out myself.

Can't say I'd have accepted the additional £5 for your 'trouble' though...it just wouldnt sit right with me.

Sometimes doing the job properly is what pisses them off. For example, I did a men's open game last spring, and in the 8th minute I had to send a player off for DOGSO-H. Clear cut, everyone saw it. The team was still majorly pissed though. It happens.

Usually before, as I usually have secure changing rooms or something similar to keep it in.

If I was on a field with no changing rooms, I'd wait as I'd probably just lose it.

Even the secure changing rooms in Portsmouth get broken into almost every week. When I was playing my team had stuff nicked several times despite the room being locked, the building being locked and people being around all the time. Luckily for me I never lost anything as I always took it out to the pitchside with me or put it on my car, a habit I have kept now I am refereeing.

Excuse my ignorance but what is DOGSO-H?

Ah... thanks for the claification.

Whilst on the topic of match fee's where can I find a guide as to what I should be paid. Can't find anything in my 2009/10 Surrey FA handbook except for cup competitions.

I have been allocated my first match on Saturday and I'm trying to be fully prepared on all aspects, even match fee's

It'll be given in the handbook of the particular competition. If you don't have a copy of this, contact the referees secretary of that competition and he/she should be able to send you a copy.
